The three decades of British rule in Palestine, from 1917 to 1948, have been the subject of intensive academic and popular debate in recent decades. In this course, students will explore key questions and themes related to the history of this period by examining significant moments and events in Mandatory Palestine. The course will focus particularly on the characteristics of British rule in Palestine and how it shaped the so-called ‘Palestine Triangle’ – the relations between the British, Arabs and Jews in Palestine and beyond. Through the study of primary and secondary sources, students will examine questions concerning local and global interests, intentions, ideologies and sentiments, which have their origins in the mandatory period and continue to shape the region today.
