Thematic Issue 3
Jewish Burial Culture
Death – Cemeteries – Desecrations – Commemoration

The third thematic issue offers insights into Jewish burial culture in Germany on the basis of the four key areas death, cemeteries, desecrations, and commemoration. Engagements with death in all its forms constitutes a central field of everyday Jewish culture and reflects centuries of history of Jewish life in Germany. Jewish cemeteries are like archives of stone, from which one can deduce the position that Jews held in German society. In many places, they are also the only Jewish sites that survived the era of National Socialism. At the same time, they document the violence that has been directed at Jewish life in Germany since time immemorial, as well as changing forms of commemoration.
The topical textbook will be available free of charge in Open Access. On the project website you will find an online view of the booklet, the individual chapters for download as well as all multimedia content and additional materials.
The thematic issue is part of the cooperative project »Turning Object into Subject. Communicating Jewish Everyday Culture in Germany,« funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
