Jewish History & Culture. Magazine of the Dubnow Institute

The fifth issue of »Jüdische Geschichte & Kultur« focuses on the materiality of Jewish written culture. Starting with bookplates, those printed or decorative label pasted into a book to indicate ownership that became famous as an own artistic genre in the 19th and 20th centuries, the issue is devoted to selected printed works, publishers, and libraries in Europe, America, and North Africa. The permanent sections Position, Critique and Archive take up some aspects of written culture, present a forgotten essay by Felix Weltsch and an unknown manuscript by Leyzer Volf. They deal with the life and work of the painter Issachar Ber Ryback and the writer Felix Salten, and pay tribute to the philosopher Albert Memmi.

The magazine of the Dubnow Institute offers insights into the diversity of Jewish lived experiences from modernity into the present. Each issue is dedicated to a specific theme, examining topical questions, establishing fundamental connections, and discussing contrary perspectives. Further aspects of the respective topic are discussed in the columns Position, Critique, and Archive.
