Volume 5 (2006)
Jahrbuch des Simon-Dubnow-Instituts/Simon Dubnow Institute Yearbook
The fifth yearbook volume showcases contributions on the general topic of diversity versus homogeneity. One of its focal points is the transition from multiethnic empires to nation states. In contrast to the organizational principle of the nation state, the Jewish world was characterized by diversity and heterogeneity. This becomes clear in the continuation of residues of Jewish corporation from the premodern days of empire through to the modern days of the nation state. Meanwhile, the articles of the focal point on Nazi »Judenforschung« reveal the ideas underpinning projects of ethnic and racial homogeneity and exclusion – a negative apotheosis of modernity.
