Gaëlle Fisher (ed.), Schlojme Bickel, Rumänien. Geschichte, Literaturkritik, Erinnerungen
Conversation with Carolin Piorun, moderated by Jessica Hughes
The live recording of the detektor.fm research quartet is dedicated to the new edition of Schlojme Bickel's monograph »Rumänien. Geschichte, Literaturkritik, Erinnerungen« (1961). Written in exile in the United States, the Yiddish-speaking author's work paints an impressive panorama of Jewish life in Romania from the late 19th century to the post-war period in 37 chapters. Now, supplemented by a detailed introduction, it is available in German translation for the first time.
In conversation with moderator Jessica Hughes, co-editor Gaëlle Fisher (GWZO, Leipzig) and Carolin Piorun (Dubnow Institute, Leipzig), a researcher specializing in Yiddish history and culture, discuss the historical and literary significance of the work. They will shed light on the role of Yiddish culture in interwar Romania, questions of memory, language, and identity in exile, and the relevance today of a work that bears witness to a lost world.
