Das Untergrundarchiv des Warschauer Ghettos

Potentiale für Forschung und Vermittlung

Sifting through the second part of the Ringelblum Archive (recovered 1 December 1950). From left to right: Adam (Rosenberg) Rutkowski (deputy director JHI), Bernard (Ber) Mark (from 1949 director of the JHI), unknown, Tatiana Brustin-Berenstein (historian, from 1946 Jewish Historical Commission and JHI), and Hersz Iwan (JHI employee). Warsaw, December 1950; source: Yad Vashem.

On the eve of the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Andrea Löw (Center for Holocaust Studies at the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich) will present the contents of the so-called Ringelblum Archive and the potential of its sources for research, education and remembrance in a introductory lecture. Afterwards, in a discussion with Monika Heinemann and Julia Roos (both Dubnow Institute, Leipzig), she will explore the question of why it is relevant to ask about the history of the origin and transmission of documents, including photographs, and what perspectives this unique collection opens up.

An event in the accompanying program of the exhibition »The Determining Gaze. Images of Jewish Life in Postwar Poland«, which will be on display at the Dubnow Institute until the end of 2025.

Moderation: Monika Heinemann und Julia Roos
