toldot. Essays on Jewish History and Culture

Volume 1

Synchrone Welten

Zeitenräume jüdischer Geschichte

toldot: Synchrone Welten, 2005

The first volume of the series is entitled Synchrone Welten. Zeitenräume jüdischer Geschichte/Synchronous Worlds. Time-spaces of Jewish History. It brings together a number of studies dealing with special features of Jewish history in East Central Europe between the modern period and the 20th century. Dan Diner's reflections on a sacrally imbued sense of time and temporality introduce the volume. Other articles explore at a micrological level key questions of Jewish history in the tension between pre-modern institutions and modern expectations of integration. The studies examine diasporic patterns of life, phenomena of mobility, migration and urbanity, as well as metaphors of Jewish existence in the modern era.

With articles by Dan Diner, Nicolas Berg, François Guesnet, Markus Kirchhoff, Yvonne Kleinmann, Frank Neesemann, Ashraf Noor, Kai Struve, Stephan Wendehorst and Susanne Zepp.
