Matzpen

Eine andere israelische Geschichte

The book explores the history of the Israeli Socialist Organization, better known under the name of their journal »Matzpen« (compass), established in 1962 as a splinter group that broke off from the Communist Party of Israel. Matzpen enraged Israeli society especially from the June 1967 War on. Calling for a withdrawal from the recently occupied territories, the group placed itself outside the dominant social consensus. Long before the June 1967 War, it considered the conflict between Arabs and Jews as insoluble on the basis of the nation-state. In contrast, Matzpen advocated a socialist revolution in the Middle East and called for recognition of the existence of an indigenous Hebrew nation. This new collective should, in ist view, integrate into the region, and linked with this was the hope to overcome the historical Palestine conflict. Against this backdrop, Lutz Fiedler's study shed new light on the political culture of Israel.
