In the »Leipzig Studies on Jewish History and Culture«, fundamental questions of the history of European Jewries are put up for discussion in case studies and individual examinations. The he contributions in german and english in this volume range from old yiddish literature in the Middle Ages to the relationship between the Roman Inquisition and the Jews and Johann Peter Hebel's interpretation of jewish linguistic change. Other essays deal with the peculiarities of Moses Mendelssohn's translation of the »Song of Songs« in the 18th century, the discourse of German Palestine studies around 1900 and the outsider role of the Jewish Holocaust researcher Joseph Wulf in the early years of the Federal Republic of Germany.
