Jewish History & Culture. Magazine of the Dubnow Institute

# 07 2023: Straße

Jewish History & Culture. Magazine of the Dubnow Institute

The seventh issue takes a cultural sociological view at the street as a space of experience, a classic topic of the rise of modernism that not only preoccupied philosophers, but also received significant attention in literature and journalism, painting, and photography of that time. Particularly from a Jewish perspective, the street often appeared as a transitional area between different social groups, as a passage that for a moment connects the individual with the whole, the private with the public aspects of life. The issue spans from the pre-modern »Judengasse« to the twentieth century on the streets of Paris, Berlin and New York, Warsaw and Lemberg to Baghdad, Jerusalem and Melbourne. The permanent sections address questions of Jewish cultural and military history in Poland as well as those about archiving and Jewish history – even in the digital age. Furthermore, the life and works of Nurith Aviv, Hermann Budzislawski, Peter Demetz, Andrei Markovits and Walter Grab are examined.

The magazine of the Dubnow Institute offers insights into the diversity of Jewish lived experiences from modernity into the present. Each issue is dedicated to a specific theme, examining topical questions, establishing fundamental connections, and discussing contrary perspectives. Further aspects of the respective topic are discussed in the columns Position, Critique, and Archive.
