Jahrbuch des Dubnow-Instituts/Dubnow Institute Yearbook

Volume 19 (2020/2021)

Jahrbuch des Dubnow-Instituts /Dubnow Institute Yearbook

The focal point of this yearbook is dedicated to Else Lasker-Schüler. Through selected works like the poetry volume »Hebräische Balladen« (Hebrew Ballads) published in 1913, the poet’s imaginations of Palestine are compared to her actual experiences as processed in other works like the 1937 volume »Das Hebräerland« (The Land of the Hebrews). The historical and literary analyses included here place Lasker-Schüler’s writings in relation to the mindscape of her contemporaries, conceptualizing flight and exile, the irredeemable loss of home, and the meaning of one’s mother tongue as aspects of the German-Jewish experience. The general section focuses on the material traces of Jewish life worlds in East-Central Europe. Various items and collections of Jewish provenance are here used to explore the dynamics of sometimes multiple histories of destruction as well as of transnational preservation initiatives during and after World War II. The yearbook also includes contributions on Italian Jewish history, on Jewish history as a subject of historiography, and on legal history.

The Dubnow Institute Yearbook is a peer-reviewed journal (double blind).
