The comparison between German colonialism and National Socialism has been discussed in a very public and controversial manner in recent years. The German Historical Museum is planning an exhibition dedicated to parallels, similarities, and continuities between German colonial history and rule under the Nazi regime. At the same time, it will explore where the gradual and fundamental boundaries of such a comparison lie. This seminar will address various fields and aspects related to this endeavor, such as: racism and antisemitism, the manifestation of inequality in law, the language of violence, resistance and repression, and conceptions of women. It will explore various sources, canonical texts, secondary literature, and biographies. The challenge lies beyond the development of a topic in the development of an exhibition unit. One of the sessions will involve a discussion with Stephan Malinowski, who has researched and published on European colonial history and National Socialism.

Literature: A reading list will be provided in advance.
