The international conference takes its cue from current debates surrounding Schocken Books to examine fundamental developments in American and international publishing and the book industry. The lectures and historical case studies focus on the personal history of the publisher's founder, Salman Schocken, and his various publishing ventures in Germany, Palestine/Israel, and the US, from the founding and development of the New York publishing house in the cultural, economic, and political climate of Jewish emigrant publishers to the upheavals of today, in which questions of corporatism, globalization, and the role of the book in the digital age are being raised. Israel, and the US, from the founding and development of the New York publishing house in the cultural, economic, and political climate of Jewish emigrant publishers to today's upheavals, in which questions of corporatist publishing play just as much a role as debates about diversity.
