Photographs of Jewish life in Postwar Poland and their Preservation in Archives and Photo Albums

Special guided tour of the exhibition »The Determining Gaze« on Provenance Research Day

Album »Fotoreportage über jüdisches Leben in Niederschlesien«, Photograph from the collection of the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute.

The exhibition shows the ambivalence of Jewish life in post-war Poland through pictures. It explores the contexts in which the photographs were taken and how they were handed down. In their guided tour, the curators Dr. Monika Heinemann and Dr. Julia Roos provide an insight into the history of the collection of the exhibited photographs and show the possibilities, but also the limitations, of researching the provenance of photographs. They also ask how exhibitions can make the provenance of photographs more visible.
