Historical Experience. Jewish Cultures of Knowledge after 1945

Place: Simon Dubnow Institute for Jewish History and Culture, Goldschmidtstraße 28, ground floor, lecture room   

 

The processes of (re)formation of Jewish knowledge in Europe after 1945 are the focus of the Research Colloquium in the Winter Semester 2007/2008. Reconstructing Jewish cultures of knowledge in Europe in the wake of the virtually total destruction of  Jewish life worlds at the hands of the Nazis constitutes a major challenge to inquiry both  practically and in respect to epistemology. The aporias for historiography and memory springing from the ‘rupture in civilization’ of Auschwitz are particularly clear and pronounced in this connection. The Jewish cultures of memory can be represented by various emerging figures in thought, practices in research and post-war institutions, and can be distinguished in their individual strata or layerings.
